Lai Jinda grew up in a family that ran a Chaozhou restaurant, and helping out there instilled in him a deep interest in the culinary arts. Zhen Xiumei, born in Myanmar, was adopted by a Christian couple, making faith a pillar of her life. She thanked God for this, remaining grateful even after learning about her origins. After retiring, Lai Jinda helped his daughter\'s company by driving tour groups. During a trip to Pingtung, he unexpectedly collapsed and nearly died three times during the hospital journey.
